Clerics
You can discuss how Merchant’s Guild should work in this forum thread.
A player must get permission from a DM before he or she can take on the cleric class for a character or create a cleric character. This is done to ensure that all PC clerics in Proskur are role played appropriately and that the great power the cleric class can give a character on our server is not abused.
A cleric is a favored desciple of some diety and a humanoid who dedicates his life to advancing the wishes of that diety. In return, that diety gives his cleric followers special powers so that they may have all the tools they need to achieve their missions. This isn’t simply a transaction of mutual gain in most circumstances as the cleric tends to sincerly believe in his diety and that diety’s philosophy. Thus, PC clerics are expected to be role played as characters fervent in their faith in all curcimstances even in situations where it puts them at a disadvantege.
This is especially the case in spell selection. Although NWN gives a cleric access to all the divine spells available to all clerics, a cleric should only have access to a certain subset of those spells that fit their portfolio and diety’s philosophy. A cleric of Illmater, for example, should not be using harm spells as Illmater is about healing and helping others and self sacrifice to achieve those ends.
Even when limiting a PCs divine spells to only those spells that jive with that PC’s diety, there exists a great potential for abuse on the part of the player. The Forgotten Realms: Proskur server has an emphasis on limited resources at all levels of play to foster an interesting economic system in the game. The Forgotten Realms: Proskur should have no “money trees” as it were and everything should come with a price based off of that thing’s value. Divine spells are a way to get around these limitations that, if abused, can cause imbalance in the server. Thus, it is important to make sure that any player that has a cleric PC can be trusted not to exploit the spells available to a cleric.
Generally, the best way to do this is again to appropriately role play the cleric character. For example, Waukeenites tend to have a great deal of wealth and the potential to grow that wealth. However, this is balanced by the fact that Waukeenites are not ones to give much in terms of charity. Conversly, clerics of Illmater would give everything they have to charity and leave themselves with nothing. This is balanced by the fact that they believe in a life of poverty and never hold onto any wealth for themselves, instead immediately donating that wealth to those who are most in need.
Therefore, players wishing to have a cleric PC must first get permission from a DM. Upon asking for permission, the DM will ask the player a couple questions about the character that will become a cleric. These questions will include (but are not limited to): “What is your cleric’s diety”, “What will the mission be for your cleric in Proskur”, “how will your cleric satisfy his or her god”, “how will you limit the powers of your cleric, especially in regards to spell selection?” The DM and player might need to negotiate for a bit to find a character concept that meets the goals of the player as well as ensure the cleric character comes off as a true desciple of that cleric’s diety.
